Confidences
Keith Haring
(1989)*

In 1989, artist and activist Keith Haring painted a
mural at Art Center College over the course of two
days. I managed to find a moment to show him the
cubistic series I’d been working on, hoping he'd allow
me to make his portrait, and he invited me to
photograph him while he painted.

The mural was painted in conjunction with the second
annual World AIDS Day (then called AIDS Awareness
Day) and as part of the first ever Day Without Art.
Meant to serve as a memorial for artists who had died
of aids, the painting also stands as a tribute to Keith
Haring himself, who died of AIDS-related
complications just two months after he completed the
mural.
