Voices
Los Mariachis* (2018)
The music was everywhere in El Paso, the
desert border town where I was born -
Mariachi melodies from Mexico. The same
songs followed me to the sleepy seaside
suburb of Los Angeles, where for three
decades I've spent countless Sundays
being serenaded by the Mariachi bands
roaming the restaurants along the
waterfront.

When our town finally sold out to the
highest bidder, promising their demolition
of San Pedro's old Port's O' Call is a
"once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change
these communities," I spent time recording
a group of our beloved musicians before
the wrecking balls arrived - in the name of
progress - bringing a sad ending to a
tradition at the port for over sixty years.
